Lorain OH Area Guide

 

Couple in the living roomLorain is located in Lorain County, Ohio. As of 2000, Lorain was home to 68,652 people, making it Ohio’s tenth most populous city. Lorain covers 493 square miles, with its northern border lying on Lake Erie. Here in Lorain you will find a diverse community, as the city is home to more than 70 different nationalities living the in the area. Many were originally attracted because of the plethora of work available in the steel mills and ship yards. The community is completely rural, with most residents earning a living by working in manufacturing, sales, or service positions.

Lorain is home to the United States Steel Mills, which cover nearly three miles of the city’s south side. They have been in operation since 1895 and to this day employ thousands of Lorain’s residents. Lorain is often referred to as “Steel City” because of all the well known steel mills.


Lorain History

Lorain County was originally a part of Huron, Medina, and Cuyahoga Counties. Lorain was named after the Lorraine region of France. On December 26, 1822, the Ohio government authorized creation of Lorain County. Oberlin College, which is located near Lorain, was the first institution of higher education in the United States to admit women and African-Americans into the same classes as white men.

Lakeview Beach
Lakeview Park, Beach and Historical Rose Garden, in the City of Lorain, are now operated by the Lorain County Metro Parks.

Lorain County Metro Parks
Lorain County Metro Parks is a unique blend of development and preservation, recreation and conservation. Forests of hardwoods blend into wetlands teeming with life. There are picnic areas to play in, nature centers to learn in, observation areas to watch from and new areas to explore that are available to everyone.

Forest Hills Golf Course
Forest Hills is an 18-hole golf course owned and operated by Lorain County Metro Parks. The course features holes of all difficulties, including a driving range, pro shop, and snack bar at the clubhouse.


Lorain Events and Activities

Apple FestivalLorain is home to many exciting events that take place throughout the year. You will find something perfect for everyone in the family! Visit the Elyria Apple Festival for great family fun or the Lorain County Fair. For something educational, the Black River Historical Society has preserved the history of Lorain since 1981 and has many artifacts on display for visitors.

Elyria Apple Festival
Held annually during the third week in September, the Elyria Apple Festival draws over 100,000 people to the 100-booths. The web site includes the schedule, vendors, Apple Festival Princesses and photos.

Lorain International Festival and Bazaar
The Lorain International Festival and Bazaar is the premier event of the summer for Lorain, Ohio. The fun all takes place along the scenic Black River. The festival features over 40 food vendors with a wide variety of ethnic cuisine to sample. There will be entertainment throughout the weekend including several live performances. Stop by the different cultural booths that spotlight crafts and items from their homeland.

Pork Fest 2008
The Pork Fest features live bands all weekend, helicopter rides, a variety of kids' activities, fireworks on Saturday night, nautical giftware and apparel, and all of your favorite festival foods!

Black River Historical Society
The Black River Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization formed in 1981 to preserve the history of the City of Lorain. The Society collects artifacts on the history of Lorain, has numerous paper files on events and people in Lorain and has a collection of over 13,000 historical photographs.

County FairLorain County Fair
Besides all the fair staples, you will find much more at the Lorain County Fair! The fair is a great way to sample some of Lorain County’s superb restaurants. Bread N Brew, Mama Jo's Pies, Midway Oh-Boy, and others are on hand to show you their specialties.
