Medina HistoryMedina was founded in 1816, and was originally part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. It was called Mecca at first, but since another Ohio town already had that name it was changed to Medina. Many of Medina’s early residents were farmers. In the 1830s the community grew substantially with the completion of the Ohio and Erie Canal. In 1846, Medina was home to six churches, fifteen stores, a newspaper office, a woolen factory, an axe factory, a flourmill, and one iron furnace. After the completion of the railroad, the community of Medina became a center for agricultural trade. Many businesses provided services or products to farmers in the surrounding countryside. Medina has continued to grow ever since as residents from Cleveland come to escape the hectic pace of the big city. Medina Parks and Recreation
